Maybe I'd start on a positive note-writing about my enjoyment of the show "Little People Big World"? But then again, I don't watch ALL that much T.V. so why focus on a television show? So I thought-direct action...I'll blog on the recent ADAPT protests and how they succeeded and where the fell short. But then that's a pretty narrow focus too--so I considered writing my first blog of the new year about other issues that I feel passionately about-maybe within my career of psychology and children's issues. Clearly, my lack of blogging hasn't been related to a lack of anything going on in my life (or my head!)......I did take a hiatus from updating my site as well but I finished a major overhaul of that last week....check it out because it's finished (for now!).....Instead, I think my lack of blogging has been more a result of my contributions in the form of writing through several other outlets. I've still been writing a monthly piece for Audacity magazine, keeping up with articles on Ragged Edge and commenting frequently, and beoming a more active member of several disability (and increasingly-psychology-related) list serves. Of course, there's no problem here, since writing for me is my main method of advocacy and expression at the time. But I do miss a compilation of my thoughts..right now they are scattered all over the place! Also, I received the last push of inspiration I needed from a recent article in Audacity about the sad finding of so many abandoned blogs-especially related to those focusing on disability topics, which mine does frequently:-) So with all that...I decided that I didn't really need ONE hot topic to return to blogging..but instead would combine that motivation and just start writing again, here in my own forum. I'm glad you've stopped by-whether you are new or a return visitor. Feel free to leave comments at any time...I like those!
Glad to be back and have a great day:-)
Love,
Kara
Jerry Lewis has meltdown

Yet another display of ignorance by Jerry Lewis...This time he resorted to calling one woman in a wheelchair a "human mattress" and accusing protesters at a recent book event of faking their disabilities saying he "bought their wheelchair and they would walk away and drive home"...obviously he sees no other way we might drive! Ughh..well-it was quite exciting to me that the protesters attended this event and gave some a chance to see his not very hidden dehumanizing views of people with disabilities...still all the journalists that I've read and seen (there's a news clip on this page) failed to do ANY background research of why in the world these crazy wheelers might be a little cranky....instead they are portrayed as random rabble rousers and poor Lewis (at least he's the one pitied now!) just couldn't talk over them. I wish this organization would have responded to the news channel with their views.
Hmm...I wonder if Miami is on his book tour---perchance my first protest is on the horizon! I am PUMPED! I must go now to practice my chants:-)

The Stanford Daily Online Edition

I interviewed Paul for last quarter's NYLN newsletter...and I'm reading his book right now to write some reviews for psychology journals hopefully to be published~so course, I had to share this!

Hurricane update

Well, I can't sleep due to good ole Wilma so I thought I'd give a little update.....I don't know what it is about hurricanes-seems like it's very motivating for me to update~I got my site updated too....guess the whole hunkering down in the house thing!
So anyways..I was so happy to get up on here and see tags on my tagboard....like I said over there (but ran out of characters!) I don't know who that Chinesomething...person is..I think it's a robot or spam or something..Sometimes I get that here on the comments section of my blog but I can delete those...Can't delete the tags..so please just ignore that weirdness!
Sooo here we are waiting out Wilma...It's not raining yet but it's really windy--already up to 40 mph which is quite windy here beings as they get all in a hizzy if it's 10mph...but nothing else is really happening HERE yet. In the Keys it looks pretty bad---however, it is fairly amusing to watch the weather people blow around..there's one crazy fellow in particular that apparently want so stand out in the crowd..He's down on the ground right now playing in the water to "show us how fast it's flowing!"......the other crew just asked if it was from the sewers!?!? Craziness..I think they are becoming a little loopy too!
So Wilma is supposed to be the worst here since Andrew...It's supposed to come through morning-2pm tomorrow...So just more time to wait....we are quite the prepared ones this time though! I got more groceries last night and Adam went for a lil water run today--oh yeah and Pepsi-the other essential. We moved the pots from the front porch-surprisingly my plants are still alive although they've kind of regressed into a wild/viny hibrid..but I still think they are pretty. Then Adam moved in everything from the back porch...we've been doing all the laundry and dishes too incase the electricity goes out....and there's TONS of ice in bags in the freezer with the coolers ready...Oh and I cleaned the house too-I have this obsession that if the lights go out I'm extremely irritated rolling over things or not being able to find things..SO I took care of that--such joys of having an extra weekend day-even if I do have to survive a minor natural disaster!
Well-the lights are a little jumpy and I must protect my dearly beloved computer so I'm off to watch my own Felicity marathon (season 1 on DVD!)....I'll update more tomorrow. Thanks for thinking of me and I'm sure we'll be fine:-)
Love,
Kara

Amazing Race-not so wheeler friendly

This just in....On the new family Amazing Race the dad on the Shroeder family just stated and I quote,"Too bad we don't have any handicapped children to push into the traffic and block the other cars. We actually did prepare this time-got gas, candles ready, flashlights, batteries, food, water, saved ice, cleaned out the coolers, did all the laundry dishes...got the house ready and then nothing happened! Well EXCEPT for Tuesday morning was really bad weather and I wasn't able to make it to class--the drive was quite daunting! I had written my professor the day before though about how I live in south Dade and we got it worse than the Broward area (where I go to school) and she let me know it was ok......and that she'd have someone take notes..that was a pleasant accomodation as my chair does not have a propeller! So Tuesday and Wednesday I caught up on my reading.....been doing research on disabilty as a culture because I think I'm going to do my first directive study and possible individual student research on a topic related to that.....I'll share a lil about the book I'm reading now when it's done.
Today was a busy day....psychopathology in the morning, then a research meeting for the Multicultural Research Group (MRG-said Merge) which is voluntary for students to get together who have the common interest of researching in the multicultural area...we can join on other people's projects and help out in different roles/caliburs at the same time getting help on our specific interest....it's a good way to work on getting publications because you are constantly working and getting support/supervision on research according to your interest and beyond class assignments...you can present it at conferences, seminars, or to the journals as papers...SO that was cool. I'm going to sign on to one project about developing a program for mulitcultural youth who are obese--based on cultural differences in obesity and eating habits...It definitely fits with my interest in children/adolescents and it'll be a good way for me to learn the reserach process..then when I am ready to lead my own project I'll be a little better prepared..SO that was lunch.
THEN.....I had my favorite class of the week-multicultural diversity..another good one and then home for the night-I'm always SO tired by Thursday so I'm feeling that right now. But just one more class tomorrow-assessments and then let the weekend begin!
Last weekend I was quite proud to get out and be social! Adam, Panch, and I went out to watch our friend Ariel aka DJ Aereo Assault:-) open for his first night at a huge club downtown.....unfortuneately we didn't know it was also the club's first night-the grand opening! SO it was CRAZY CROWDED! And even though we were on the list..they weren't letting anyone else in-the fire marshall was on the way! So we went to another club in the Grove instead-it was a fun night and so good to relax and hang out. This weekend we've got super fun plans to celebrate my ATHENS ANNIVERSARY! Saturday will mark a year from my event day in Athens last year..I can't believe it's been that long. and HOW fitting that we'll be volunteering at Sports Access Day which is a day to promote sports for people with disabilities in Broward County. I went two years ago just after we moved and met alot of cool people in the area so I'm really looking forward to it..can't wait!
Well-that's all for me! Here's a picture from the weekend. I want to wish my Aunt Jane a VERY VERY VERY Happy Birthday! Been thinking about her today and hope she had a good one. Will write again soon!:-)

Help me out here!

trail_sign1_1.jpg (JPEG Image, 413x353 pixels)

What the heck? You don't want to be pitied because you're a cripple in a wheelchair, stay in your house." -Jerry Lewis (Click on the link in the entry below to HEAR him say these words and then (more importantly) hear the response of a disability rights activitst.

So, I thought I'd start this destined to be a rambling post with a few of the infuriating quotes from Jerry Lewis which have led me to declare him one of my few enemies! Every year this day gets closer and sure...I think like the rest of us..happy thoughts of a day off or maybe a picnic, but I also in a way dread the day. As others have said, "It's the worst day to be a person with a disability in America." I'm not sure I agree there is a bad day to be a person with a disability as I'm proud of my culture and identity every day. But it is a very frustrating day knowing that as I type, as I study to be a psychologist today, as I drive, as I live independently, as I live as an ADULT.......he will be spreading so many damagine messages all day long. It is also very frustrating to know how successful and highly watched the telethon is each and every year. Imagine the possibilities if Jerry spread messages of disability pride, accessibility, and inclusion.
With figures like 54 million dollars raised in under 24 hours and 36% of Americans recognizing Jerry Lewis as the celebrity with the most recognizable cause...this problem becomes even MORE of a contribution to the oppression faced by people with disabilities.
Some people-even friends-respond with suggestions that I should really calm down, not worry about it, there's not much you can do, it's one day, and it does raise money for research....but research for what? Not living with a disability, but to eventually erase our culture.....that is the underlying focus of the telethon because the founders don't believe life with a disability is worth living. So, if counteracting that way of thinking in whatever small way I can isn't worth getting a little ryled up about.....I don't know what is!

"You life begins to end when you stop speaking up about the things that matter."
-Martin Luther King Jr.
Someone I would MUCH rather quote.

So what have I done about it today? Well, first I vowed not to watch it and of course, I've tried to spreak that message to my family and friends. I must admit I momentarily broke that vow for about 2 minutes...just long enough to see the Harley Davidson company giving rides to children with muscular dystrophy saying "These kids have hope that one day they'll be able to ride a motorcycle." Well...uhhh...yeah-hopefully they do since when they grow up there's already plenty of adaptations that would allow them to ride or DRIVE a motorcycle." But of course, that picture couldn't be painted.....it has to be this far off dreamy land that through money the ever great able bodied world could give us the pleasure of living more like them. Well, then I snapped to my senses and recalled my promise and turned it off......I am improving! One year I tried to watch it and take note of all that participated deciding to ban anything they did in future from my life. I decided that was pretty negative and not really productive....not to mention it made me really cranky on my day off!

So, I've tried to express my feelings on this not as a ball of bitterness which is a close cousin to he pity that Lewis preaches...but as a contributing AULT member of society NOT anyone's "kid" (well except my mama and papa) I hope that someday my voice and the voices of my friends with disabilities will be heard enough to stop the telethon's oppressive and discriminatory messages from being spread even one day a year. It's my dream that more people will see that life is definitely worth living with and without a disability and that people with disabilities can be excellent employees, employers, friends, leaders, parents, and fellow Americans. Other countries have long ago recognized the negativity in the messages of the telethon. The MDA in Canada rasies money in a positive way without the message of pity. America is not being a leader on this front. I do hope to do more in the future to fight for the end of the MDA Jerry Lewis telethon.......With Jerry's statements year after year after year, it is MUCH too late for any apologize conveniently worded by CBS executives. Jerry has made abundently clear how he views people with disability and worse-how he has decided most people do. America needs to have the chance to see more of the other side of the coin...not pity but independence, dignity, and pride. So I leave you with yet another of the remarks Jerry Lewis has shared with the world on his view of people with disabilities....This one especially hit home with his remarks on disabled sports. I had deleted this a few times-moving it up in this post with the other quotes so that I could end on an uplifting note of hope. But today is a day that you should be fired up and at least a little frustrated and angry about this. We all should.

"I know the courage it takes to get on the court with other cripples and play wheelchair basketball, but I'm not as fortunate as they are," Lewis wrote, halfway into the piece. He had so far managed to include nearly every term or concept offensive to disability rights advocates, and his next sentences would work in the others: "I'd like to play basketball like normal, healthy, vital and energetic people. I really don't want the substitute. I just can't half-do anything. When I sit back and think a little more rationally," he continued, "I realize my life is half, so I must learn to do things halfway. I just have to learn to try to be good at being half a person."

*Leave me a comment:-)

Jerry Lewis Vs. I got gas on my way home to make sure I have some because two stations are out here in Kendall-ever so worrying to me with how much I'm using to drive to school! My class today was on intelligence assessment-the professor seems pretty laid back compared to the others but there's still a TON of reading and we each have to check out this IQ test briefcase to complete our reading assignment--we have to recheck it out every three days! That's kind of a pain-especially lugging that around..I think I need a service donkey to carry my books! During the semester I have to give the WAIS to one adult and the WISC to a child...those are both IQ type of tests..just to learn how to give these, score, and interpret them...but we aren't allowed to share the results which is understandable but I'm sure the volunteers will be curious..I would be!

When I got home, I got a really cool phone call from the OI Foundation-We've started work on the BeFit campaign...I am co-chairing the project with Sean Stephenson and it should launch this week. I'm super pumped about it and will devote a whole blog to it tonight....for now-I MUST nap! It's rainy here and I need just alil rest before I have to start reading readin reading..........
Bye for now,
Kara

hurricane Katrina..the news gets worse

The news from the hurricane continues to get worse.....I just heard the story of 30 parents of kids that waited at the end of a street for hours..they heard a rumor that a bus was coming to pick them up to reunite them with their children--who were staying in the pediatric unit of a New Orleans hospital...water flooded the first floor of the hospital where the parents had to stay so they had to leave. The bus never came because it was a rumor but one father told a reporter that his son had just had a bone marrow transplant earlier this week and the boy and his mother had been rescued from the roof of a helicopter hanging on to a rope with his mom holding his medical equipment.......After a transplant-kids have NO immune system--they are usually in total isolation...I pray for the miracle he would need to survive even if he went out in NORMAL conditions.........
I also heard that they are busing thousands to Texas, where the schools will immediately be open to children to have some sense of normalcy...I think this would be an effective way to reach many of these kids with the therapists that are on their way to help with the trauma and fear that so many children are experiencing right now. I wonder if those kids will need school supplies, clothes, kid stuff!......I know those needs aren't prioritized (and shouldn't be) but it would be a good project for someone to start.
I also think of the animals-all the pets left behind....a woman on the news said yesterday you could hear the dogs crying and whining...there's no one to rescue them.
It's so depressing to watch the news..and overwhelming! Trying to find the balance between avoiding reality and getting overexposed to it all--especially the pictures!

Today was my day off so I got some errands done...got some gas..not much for the $$! I'm a little panic-y about the possibility of more gas stations running out of gas here...we already have a few that have never gotten gas back after the storm hit here. I just go through it so fast with school! I got a few groceries too and finished all my ethics reading! I'm stil waiting on one of my books that I ordered from half.com..I hope it gets here soon. My dorky self is getting nervous.
Well, that's all for now!
I whipped up the image at the top last night and today...Figured I needed a reminder of nature's beauty with all the devastation right now.
Kara

First days of school

I'm home from day 2 of school and thought I'd do a lil updating. Yesterday was a long day but a really good one! We had a shortened orientation in the morning since the all-day one was cancelled on Friday due to the hurricane! It was alot of information but just made me more excited about the program....there are so many different areas of research going on by different faculty members-which is why I think it's a huge benefit to be in a big program...our program is pretty big for PsyD students but there are only 20 total other PhD students...by mid Sept. all Phd students have to sign on board with a professor for our first research practicum..only one credit hour-it's basically to get us right involved on some study.....There are a few that I'm pondering-I'm going to use my day off tomorrow to look over them more, look at our clinic's site and see if I can find out more, and then meet with the different professors of my top choices on Thursday before I decide.....I also have to decide soon whether I want to apply for a concentration..I definitely am already enrolled in a TRACK which is child/adolescent specialization but I can also select my electives and apply for a concentration--you have to be accepted into it and I'd find out by mid November.....The two that I'm considering are neuropsych and health psychology..the weird thing about both is that I'm quite pumped about some areas of the branch but can't see myself practicing in other areas....like for neuropsych, I'm interested in the newer link between mind/body..the different brain wirings for introverts/extroverts....the connection between frontal lobe development and juvenile delinquents.....different therapies that work to counteract abnormal brain development...BUT I'm not really interested in endless assessment or extensive work with severe traumatic brain injuries. Then with health psych which I'm leaning more toward...I'm extremely interested in the connection between rehabilitation, disability, and mental health...but a lil wary on the focus on addiction...But the more I think about it-there is a huge connection...substance abuse is a huge often untreated problem among many people with disabilities and addiction is also present in the lives of many kids in juvenile justice programs--both populations I can see myself working with SO as of now, I'll probably apply for the health concentration..I just have to look into what sort of practicum placements I do under that concentration...Then there are a ton of student groups within the grad psychology dept..which we are in our own huge building so it's a neat lil community....The one I'm most pumped about it the student advocacy group which deals with legislation and advocacy on mental health issues...They work with the community to destigmatize mental illness and seeking therapy...They also work on political issues that face our profession--like the new psychopharmacology priveleges....Our dean said that it is looking VERY likely that by the time we graduate most states will allow psychologists to write prescriptions for psychotropic drugs...which is really good for $$ in the field but is pretty much pushing psychiatrists out of business...Managed care has realized the trend that they often see patients for only a few minutes and then bill insurance BIG $$ for their diagnosis and prescription..managed care is seeing the research and realizing from a business end that they can pay less $ per hour and get both treatment and prescription from one central person.....Florida and California are expected to sign this into law anytime...four other states already have.
There are also student organizations within APA (American Psychological Assn) that are really active at Nova. They just had over 30 other grad students (2nd years and ups) get back from the annual conference in DC. I saw a friend that I made at interview day, Allison-a fellow wheeler and a second year in the program-and she asked if I'd like to join her researching and maybe making a presentation on issues facing people with disabilities.........I was QUITE pumped about that! and can't wait to talk to her more about it....So it's a pretty exciting time. I'm just trying to stay really organized and figure out what I want to get involved with the most...There's already a TON of reading but so far everything has been interesting--even ethics this morning which was an amazing feat! So...I'm already VERY happy as a Nova Knight!

Things are moving along with NYLN too.(the national youth leadership network)....I'm on two committees-vice chairing the public information committee where our main project for the past few months has been getting a newsletter together written by and for the youth in our network (young leaders with disabilities)..It has taken FOREVER and been a total learning experience....but after all he ups and downs. It'll be out in the next couple weeks! YEAH! Just in time for us to start working on the fall issue....I'm actually writing the letter seeking submissions tonight. This one will go better though I think-I've got new tricks in mind!:-)

So that's a lil recap of the life o Kara..Tomorrow is my day off and I'm going to try and get some reading done and look into applying for a few leadership grants I've heard about lately...Then Thursday I have class all morning and all afternoon..one of these days I gotta find the disability services office too. Ya know-have a wheeler reunion. Everything on the campus is so nice-I'm just trying to learn it in pieces so I have some idea where I am!

OH before I go..I forgot about the terrrrrible news on our backyard..yesterday Adam was home and heard a bunch of commotion-only to find people DROP KICKING our fence down..turns out so many of the fences in our apt. complex were damaged by the storm that they are knocking THEM ALL down to put up new ones...what makes me a lil fiesty is that I don't know why we were the first ones! This happened Monday and most people still have their fences.....Meanwhile..poor poor Bailey and Obie are QUITE distraught about their yard. They have to go out on a leash everytime...who knows what crazed dogs are roaming about ready to gulp my Bunk down! So hopefully we'll have a fence soon...not too hopeful though!

That's it for now!
Kara

Hurricane aftermath

Things in Miami are still a mess after Katrina, but there's great news in that we got cable back today and it turns out that Adam and I are VERY lucky that we have power back on already. We had friends come over today to enjoy our A/C and lights...they never got their power back after Thursday night. The Dolphin Mall, which is one exit up from here, set up a a drive through station for water and ice! I haven't been out yet because there is debris everywhere..allll over the sidewalks and in the parking lots BUT I've got a serious case of cabin fever so tomorrow I'm venturing out to get a few school supplies--my school starts on Monday and I'm very very excited. It's amazing how short-winded I am tonight but I've been updating my site again so I don't have too much more to contribue..my brain is computer fried! Leave me a message to let me know what you think!

Yippee! I'm super happy that I FINALLY got the tag board and USA Today headlines working on my blog page. I added some super cool new stuff on the Join Kara's Team page too..check it out! There's a paint board where you can draw with people all over the world and even games you can play with nothing to download. So after some thinking and a little time on my hands due to being blockaded in from hurricane Katrina, I've decided to switch my webjournal to a brand new blog! Why you ask? Well a few reasons...First, it's a time for new beginnings and what better way to celebrate and second, my last blogging site had a few restrictions and not as many cool add-ons...I'm planning to take advantage of the new tools on Blogger and update MUCH more often. The first thing I'm adding is a tag board because that was definitely my favorite part on my old journal site......I LOVED all the comments people left me...especially the new ones from my mom's new middle schoolers. Hey Elks! Those comments and all my old entries are not lost in cyberspace..no need to fear! They are still hanging out and can be accessed at any time from my Paralympics page on my site. The journal documents an entire year of my life, before during and after the Games. So, if anyone wants to check it out--there it is! I'm sure I'll go back and reminisce too! Well, it's super late here..I just wanted to get this up and running.
